Thrace, or Thraki, is in the northeast corner of Greece, bordering Turkey and Bulgaria. It is the least known area to visitors to Greece which is not surprising since it is the least visited part of Greece by the Greeks themselves. Exempt from the population exchange that sent Muslims from Greece to Turkey and Christians from Turkey to Greece, Thrace is one of the most interesting parts of Greece with an Eastern influenced cuisine, a large Muslim population, the usual beautiful beaches and coastline, mountains, rivers, lakes and wetlands. Though the area is mostly agricultural and tourism is undeveloped it still attracts some Greeks and visitors from the surrounding countries looking for nature, adventure and good food. The Evros Delta is a paradise for bird-watchers and nature lovers. Alexandroupolis is a cosmopolitan city with great hotels and restaurants. The back streets of Kommotini and Xanthi with their mix of cultures will bring you back to a Greece as it was over 100 years ago as well the surrounding villages. See Matt's Guide to Alexandroupolis Click on the links below to see my recommended hotels followed by other highly rated accommodations. A great way to plan your trip is my Create-an-itinerary page which allows you to put together a custom itinerary with the help of a travel agency with no obligation to book.
