Crete

You can't really compare Crete to the other Greek Islands. Crete is so large it is almost a country in itself. In fact it could be a country in itself. Many of the major coast towns like Iraklion, Malia, Elounda and Hersonissos have fancy resort hotels with swimming pools, Zorba the Greek restaurants, golf and so on. If you go for that sort of thing, which many people do, then you have some of the best in Greece with a backdrop of one of the most fascinating and beautiful islands in the country. If it were me I would focus on Chania and western Crete, at least on your first visit. But there are beautiful beaches and towns and hotels all over the island and if you are like most people your first trip to Crete won't be your last. For information on Crete see Matt Barrett's Guide to Crete.

I have divided the island into East, West and South because there were too many hotels to fit on one page. Click on the links below to see my the pages for my recommended hotels followed by other highly rated accommodations. You can also use the Crete Hotel Search if the choices here seem too overwhelmingor if you are looking for a particular hotel. A great way to plan your trip is my Create-an-itinerary page which allows you to put together a custom itinerary with the help of a travel agency with no obligation to book. You can find recommended travel agencies on Matt's Travel Agencies and Tours Page. Because there are so many WONDERFUL HOTELS in Crete don't just focus on my suggested hotels. You will find hotels just as nice in the sections below which are presented by category.

Agios Nikolaos, Crete
Eastern Crete

Chania, Crete
Western Crete

Matala, Crete
Southern Crete

You can find more hotels, villas, apartments, holiday homes and rooms in Crete by location, price, whether or not it has a swimming pool or is on the beach, and see photos, maps and reviews by Searching More Crete Hotels. Excellent prices and many hotels you can book and then cancel with no cancellation fee. For those who want to book without using a travel agency this is the best way to do it.

Otherwise if you need assistance you can use Matt's Create an Itinerary Form or visit the website of Fantasy Travel who can assist you with hotels, ferries and putting your trip together.

For transfers from the port and airport to your hotel in Crete I recommend Lefteris the Cretan Taxi Driver who also does tours of the island. For lots more information on Crete see www.greecetravel.com/crete
