Meteora
Meteora is the most spectacular place in Greece that is not called Santorini. Imagine a flat plane with giant mountain sized rocks growing out of it, topped by monasteries hundreds of years old. Meteora like Delphi is included on the Classical Greece Mainland Tour which has been done by millions of travelers since the beginning of the age of tourism. It was also the setting for a James Bond movie For Your Eyes Only, with Roger Moore (a stunt man actually) scaling the cliffs of the Holy Trinity Monastery. The villages of Kalambaka and Kastraki are both within easy striking distance of the monasteries. If you are concerned about having to do a lot of climbing, cars and buses can get right to the entrances of most of the monasteries. The area is also popular with rock climbers and hikers. The city of Trikala is one of the undiscovered pleasures of mainland Greece with a cosmopolitan downtown with a trout filled river running right through the center.
