Corfu

Corfu

The Ionian islands of western Greece remind many people of Italy, particularly the island of Corfu. They receive more rain than the islands in the Aegean and so are greener. Known for their beautiful beaches, unique cuisine and package tourism they are not as easy to reach from Athens since there are no boats. Many people fly, some direct from their home countries. There are however ferry connections from several ports in Western Greece and you can drive to Lefkada. For more about the Ionian Islands see My Greek Island Guide Ionian Page.

Corfu (Kerkyra)

CorfuAnyone who has read the books of Gerald and Lawrence Durrell knows about Corfu. Located in the northwest corner of Greece on the Adriatic sea, across a narrow strait from Albania, Corfu or Kerkyra, has such a British influence that they still play cricket in the main square. Corfu town, which is a small city actually, will remind you of Italy and was spared by the earthquake that flattened the major towns and cities on the other Ionian Islands. Corfu is a large island with a mountainous and forested interior with traditional villages barely impacted by tourism. The coast boasts spectacular beaches or all shapes and sizes, large and small resorts and coastal towns. There are daily flights from Athens and also from many European cities, ferries from Italy and a bus-ferry connection from Athens. Corfu is one of the most popular islands in Greece and has a tourist season that begins in May and goes through September. For more information see my Guide to Corfu

See Matt's Guide to Corfu

To get to the Ionian islands you will need to go to Western Greece to take a ferry or else fly from Athens. You can book a transfer from Athens Airport with George the Famous Taxi Driver whose prices are quite reasonable and definitely a good deal if you are sharing the cost since he charges by the journey and not by the person.  You can get all the way to Corfu and Lefkada by taxi.

Kefalonia

Kefalonia, GreeceThe island of Kefalonia is one of the most beautiful and interesting islands in the Ionian group. Though many people may recognize its name from the book and movie Corelli's Mandolin, the island offers more than just stunning scenery and crystal clear seas. The interior of the island is mountainous with beautiful pine forests. The coast has a variety of beach types from fine white sand to small pebbles. Though almost every building was destroyed by an earthquake in 1953, the whole island has been rebuilt. People looking for resorts and beaches usually stay in the towns of Lassi and Skala. The town of Fiscardo was spared by the earthquakes and has a picturesque harbor and is popular with yachters. Coastal towns like Sami, Poros, Agia Efymia and Karavomilos offer the kind of Greek holiday spot that feels like the real Greece. For those who like city life Argostoli is one of the more vibrant cities in Greece with a large central square and a beautiful harbor. For more photos and information see my Guide to Kefalonia

Lefkada (Lefkas)

Nydri, Lefkada, GreeceLefkada is a lovely island, rich in vegetation and like the other Ionian islands has beautiful beaches that attract a variety of tourists. It has recently become more popular with the Athenians because you can drive to it. The island is connected to the Greek mainland by a small causeway and a bridge. Lefkada's  main resort is Nydri, a 2km strip of villas, hotels, restaurants, bars, shops and agencies  which is quite mild by the standards of Corfu or Zakynthos. Lefkada's lofty interior contains some scenic traditional villages where you can still get a strong sense of the Greece of days gone by. Lekada Town is under half an hour by road from Preveza airport, which has flights from Athens most days and charters from the UK and other northern European countries in season. There are also at least four daily buses from Athens and other services twice a week from Patra and Thessaloniki. For more about Lefkada read Nick Edwards' Guide to Lefkada

Zakynthos(Zante)

Shipwreck Beach ZakynthosThe island of Zakynthos is known for a number of things. The iconic photo of Shipwreck Beach, listed as one of the top 10 beaches in the world, has appeared in every travel magazine and website in the last few years. The resort town of Laganas is known for its clear azure sea and the fact that the caretta-caretta, or loggerhead turtles, come here to lay their eggs among the sun-beds and umbrellas, one reason they are an endangered species. Zakynthos town which was demolished by the same series of earthquakes that destroyed Kefalonia, has been rebuilt, though it no longer bares much resemblance to what used to be called "the Venice of the East". It does have the classiest range, if not the greatest number, of accommodations and restaurants on the island. It's a good place to base yourself for exploring Zakynthos. Zakynthos has several daily flights from Athens, a daily easyJet connection from London Gatwick from late March to October and plenty of charters from northern Europe, especially the UK, from May to October. The main ferry connection is from Kyllini on the coast of the Peloponnese, which has 5-7 services a day, according to the time of year, to Zakynthos Town. For more about the island visit Nick Edwards' Zakynthos Page

Ithaki (Ithaka)

Of course you know that Ithaki, or Ithaka is the island that Odysseus returned to from the Trojan War after a very long journey, to find his wife Penelope waiting for him. Ithaki is mountainous and rocky but has lots of trees and olive groves, as do the other Ionian islands. Several archeological sites which may or may not be associated with Homer's story along with some beautiful fishing villages and beaches make this an interesting island to visit. Ithaka is an ideal place for walking full of trails and views and has a handful of very nice beaches.

Paxos

So you are looking for that quiet undiscovered island, unspoiled and beautiful, with pine forests that go down to the sea? Well you have found it, except for maybe the undiscovered part. It has been discovered by people like Madonna, Bruce Springsteen, Steven Spielberg, Bruce Willis and who knows how many other celebrities? That's alright. You probably won't ever see them and they don't care of they see you. But besides being the little-known playground of the rich and famous Paxos is known as the home of Greece's greatest guitar player Yiannis Spathas. Giaos is the main port and is still pretty much a fishing village for the most part. Lakka and Longos are picturesque ports, popular with yachters, with fish tavernas, bars and cafes.

Kythira

Yes, I know what you are thinking. Kythira? How is Kythira one of the Ionian Islands? It is nowhere near the Ionian Islands, located in between the southeastern tip of the Peloponessos and the island of Crete. But trust me. Kythira is one of the Ionian islands and is completely different from the others, though no less beautiful. Kythira is the least touristy of the Ionian Islands, with its busy season being August when the people who immigrated to Australia and other places return for the summer holidays. With large bays, a rugged terrain and beautiful beaches, and architecture influenced by the Venetians, Ottoman and Aegean culture, Kythira often becomes the favorite island of anyone who goes there. There are daily boats from Neapolis and a couple ferries a week that stop there on the way to Kasteli, Crete. Kythira has an airport with flights from Athens.
